In 2002 the Member States, candidate countries, EFTA-EEA countries, the European Social Partners and the European Commission (EC) subscribed the Declaration that kicked-off the Copenhagen Process: Vocational Education and Training (VET) was then valued for fostering job-specific and transversal skills, facilitating the transition into employment and maintaining and updating the skills of the workforce according to sectoral, regional and local needs.
They encouraged “promote cooperation in quality assurance” and to “strengthen the European dimension of VET”.
In 2004 the Maastricht Communiqué set out, among other priorities to “strengthen planning of VET provision, including, partnerships (…) and to develop open learning approaches and flexible more individualised pathways to enhance progression”
In 2017, teachers need training in as well as examples of good practices of innovative, interactive and inspiring learning and teaching methods. While the pupils need teachers who are motivated to offer them both professional expertise and functional language in way that speaks to them and makes them realize that what they are learning is useful and necessary for both their professional and personal lives.
In this context, Boost for CLIL in VET project, Foreign Language and Acquisition of Marketable Educational Skills, aims at improving the competitiveness and employability of vocational students in a global European market by:
- Developing and testing a Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) on the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, starting by testing an Open Online Course (OOC) in English which will result in a MOOC.
- Designing and implement an electronic open platform, that permits to mutualise the different materials developed in each region/country and to share experiences; This will ensure a sustainable transnational community of Vocational Education and Training (VET) professionals that allows the exchange of materials
The specific objectives aimed:
- To stress the need to master foreign languages as a key competence to foster employability in all VET sectors.
- To highlight the importance of developing intercultural competences as European citizens working in a global market.
- To help teachers disseminate critical thinking skills through their teaching practices.
- To disseminate and exchange innovative methodologies and approaches in the VET teaching and learning context done in a foreign language.
- To define assessment strategies and use different tools for assessment of the competences to be acquired by VET learners (digital, social, linguistic, contents)
- To use Web 2.0 Tools and apps not only for engaging learners but also, for the opportunities they offer with regards to sharing knowledge and good teaching and learning practices among teachers all over Europe, especially in those regions with fewer resources.
- To improve teacher training programmes by teaching trainers how to use the many available tools effectively.
- To enhance mutual trust amongst vocational schools and institutions for further future mobility project
Six EU partners participate in this initiative to provide the Vocational Education and Training (VET) professionals with innovative tools in order to enhance a new way of teaching and learning.
